Chorus:
C C G7 G7
Freight train, freight train, going so fast
G7 G7 C C
Freight train, freight train, going so fast
E E F F
Please don't tell what train I'm on
      C G C C
They won't know where I'm gone

Instrumental: 16 Bars

Freight train, freight train, coming round the bend,
Freight train, freight train, gone again,
One of these days, turn that train around
And go back to my hometown.

Chorus

When I'm dead and in my grave
No more good times here I crave
Place the stones at my head and feet
And tell them all I've gone to sleep

Instrumental: 16 Bars

One more place I'd like to be,
One more place I'd love to see,
To watch them Old Blue Ridge Mountains climb
When I ride Old Number nine.

Chorus

When I die, oh bury me deep
Down at the end of old Chestnut Street
So I can hear old Number Nine
As she comes rolling by

Instrumental: 16 Bars

Freight train, freight train, run so fast
Freight train, freight train, run so fast
Please don't tell what train I'm on
They won't know what route I'm going

Chorus

Freight Train - Elizabeth Cotten
Elizabeth Cotten Freight Train is an American folk song written by Elizabeth Cotten in the early 20th century and popularized during the American folk revival period of the 1950s and 1960s.

By Elizabeth’s own account in the 1985 BBC series Down Home, she composed “Freight Train” as a young teenager, inspired by the sound of the trains rolling in on the tracks near her home in North Carolina.

The first recording of the song was made by Mike Seeger in 1957–1958, at Elizabeth’s home in Washington, D.C. Ramblin' Jack Elliott recorded this song in 1957. It is included on the CD The Lost Topic Tapes: Cowes Harbour 1957
